Riviera Maya Jazz Fest 2009 Artists Revealed

PLAYA DEL CARMEN -- The Seventh Annual Riviera Maya Jazz Festival will take place November 25-28 in Playa del Carmen and will feature such artists as The Royal Band, Colin Hunter, Pat Martino, Al Jarreau, Herbie Hancock, Fernando Toussaint and Aguamala.

The 2009 festival is the best cast ever assembled in the event's seven year history. Like other years, though, the concerts will be entirely free to the public.

According to officials, the festival has already lead to an 18% increase in hotel reservations compared to the same time period last year. Past artists have included George Benson, Tower of Power, Marcus Miller, Hector Infanzon, Iraida Noriega, Lucca Littera, Earl Klugh, David Sanborn and Fourplay.

This year's Riviera Maya Jazz Fest takes place November 29 to December 1. The event takes place at Mamita's Beach Club, which is just a mile and a half north of the Playa del Carmen town square. The shows take place on the beach and are free to the public.

Riviera Maya Filling up for Jazz Festival

Riviera Maya tourism officials estimate hotel occupancy in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya to top 80% during this year’s Jazz Festival, which takes place November 22-25. The Jazz Festival, based in Playa del Carmen, will host numerous major jazz artists and will feature public displays throughout the region.

Schedule of events:

Wednesday, November 22: Performances by jazz and funk music icon Screaming Headless Torsos with guitarist David Fucinzcky.

Thursday, November 23: Mint Condition performs with Wet Paint.

Friday, November 24: Kool & the Gang plays with Tom Coster.

Saturday, November 25: Tom Coster performs a Beatles tribute set then Nacho Mendez and special guests play to close the festival.

Travelers planning on traveling to the region during this period should book their trips as soon as possible, to make sure they get the hotels they prefer.
