Jorge and Brenda Alfaro, owners of the Ajua Maya Cantina in Playa del Carmen, are hosting a benefit dinner to raise funds for several area musicians injured in a car crash that occured on May 1, 2006. The group was traveling in a van at 2:30am on their way to Chetumal when their vehicle ran off the road and flipped. There were no other cars and no drugs or alcohol were involved.
The only female in the van was not severely injured and was able to comfort the other five passengers, most of whom were bleeding and unconscious. Three hours later, a taxi drove by and immediately went for help. Amazingly, they all survived and have been released from area hospitals, but all but one are still unable to work. The group includes two players from the Ajua Maya house band.
The benefit will take place at the Ajua Maya restaurant (4th Street, between 5th Ave. and 10th Ave.) on May 21 at 10pm. The cost is $10 USD or $100 pesos and includes a fajita plate and a beer or soft drink. Ajua Maya is donating the food and all proceeds benefit the injured musicians.
If you are in Playa and can help, please attend this worthwhile benefit. Donations are also being accepted online.
