Cancun's Top Dive Sites

Known across the world as a mecca for water sports, Cancún is at the far northern tip of the Great Mayan Reef and does not have as much coral growth as the areas farther south. The water is as clear as a shot of tequila blanco, though, and some five hundred species have been documented. Most of the dives are fairly shallow and can be enjoyed by both snorkelers and scuba divers.

La Bandera - Accessible from either Cancún or Isla Mujeres, this reef stretches out for hundreds of feet at a depth of 40–50 feet. It is home to angel fish, parrot fish, barracuda, lobsters, moray eels, anemones, and living coral, including elkhorn and staghorn. The large Mexican flag (or bandara) that is on Cancún is due south of the dive spot.

Punta Cancún - This open-water dive is near the eastern tip of Cancún, offshore from the Hyatt Regency, Dreams, and Riu hotels. Divers see lots of colorful fish, sea urchins, sponges, and sometimes sharks. The average depth is 45 feet.

Punta Nizúc - This shallow bay is offshore from the bridge that connects Cancún to the mainland near the airport, close to the Club Med Hotel. There is an artificial island here, where snorkeling tour groups make their home base.
