July 10, 2006 -- If you've ever walked south from the town plaza in Cozumel, you've probably passed right by the Mexico naval base and peeked into the windows as the uniformed guards lie in their bunks or pace along with their machine guns. The station was destroyed by Hurricane Wilma last fall and is now in the process of being rebuilt, starting with the complete demolishion of the old building.
The military installation is next to the Punta Langosta cruise ship pier and almost right across the street from Carlos 'n Charlies and Senior Frog's. The new facility will be built in the same place as the old one and is expected to be completed by early next year.
