September 22, 2006, MEXICO CITY – Mexico's largest operator of airports, Asur, has officially filed papers with the national government to seek a permit to build and operate an international airport south of Playa del Carmen. The airport will likely be located near the town of Tulum, but a final decision has not yet been made.
Asur currently operates airports in nine cities in southern Mexico, including Cancun and Cozumel, which currently serve visitors to the Riviera Maya.
