Marco Morales answered his cell phone Friday and said he remains a free man, working at the lunch counter where he and his girlfriend serve garlicky pork sandwiches near the bus station in tropical Merida, Mexico.

A day after federal prosecutors in his former hometown of Chicago re-indicted Morales on an old drug charge, the corrupt City Hall contractor said he again would fight extradition from Mexico.

After fighting off an effort to extradite him from Mexico last year, Morales has lived in Merida, in the Yucatan Peninsula, making occasional trips to the beach resort town of Playa del Carmen to sell his paintings.
