Cancun & Riviera Maya Renewal Continues

Following is an excerpt from an article in The Globe and Mail about the continued recovery in Cancun and The Riviera Maya in the wake of last year's devastating hurricanes.

"Conventional wisdom would have it that hurricanes are not good for business, especially when that business is tourism. But Cancun has turned that logic on its head, using the massive cleanup effort following Hurricane Wilma as an opportunity to rebuild and revitalize one of Mexico's most important sun-and-sand destinations.

Hurricane Wilma, a Category 5 storm, hit Cancun last October, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake and forcing thousands of tourists to evacuate to emergency shelters. In the ensuing months, the once-dazzling hotel strip resembled a construction site, with many resorts remodelling and upgrading their offerings."
