Riviera Maya Airport Update

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MAY 2007 -- The latest news from The Riviera Maya seems to indicate that a new airport is not necessarily in the immediate future. In fact, the operator of the existing Cancun Airport, which visitors currently use to access Playa del Carmen and surrounding cities, is proposing a new rail line to serve the region. The company, Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), recently expanded its services in Cancun and doesn't believe a new airport is necessary, at least not yet.

There is definitely a need for further infrastructure enhancement, but the debate is on whether the area would be best-served by a new airport, or just by improving ground transportation along the already crowded highway that connects Cancun to the beach destinations farther south.
