Akumal -- Half eco-park, half guesthouse, The Jungle Place is one of the few places in the Riviera Maya where visitors can observe tropical animals in their natural habitat - and also interact with them. This 20-acre sanctuary is in the jungle between Akumal and Tulum, about 20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen. The grounds are a sanctioned reserve for the endangered spider monkey and royal toucan. Guests can expect to see snakes, monkeys, birds, iguanas and many other species.
Guests stay in individual one-bedroom cottages, complete with full kitchen, air-conditioning, TV, phone and Internet access. The guest homes are surrounded with tropical gardens, native herbs, flowering plants and trees.
Though the Jungle Place is somewhat remote, it's still close enough to the primary attractions of the Riviera Maya. It's a great place for an out-of-the-way visit or overnight stay for those who want to experience nature, but still be close to the activities of the Riviera Maya.
