Experts Consider Riviera Maya for Ethnic Tourism

TULUM VILLAGE -- Tourism specialists in the Riviera Maya are considering the possibility of creating opportunities for "ethnic tourism" in the region. They have determined that the Zona Maya (the Mayan zone around Tulum and towns further south and inland) has enormous potential for a type of tourism that introduces visitors to the local culture in a very low-impact way. The objective is to revitalize local Mayan communities by showing off their local ethnic culture to tourists, sharing their world vision, culture, food and architecture.

In a program such as this, proceeds would directly benefit the local community, allowing them to increase their standard of living in a sensible way, without altering their culture or ethnic ways. The tourists would arrive in small groups and would integrate into the community for a number of days. As one expert puts it, "The Mayan culture is not the ruins; the Mayan culture is alive."
