Ultramar Dock Shut Down

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, June 8 -- After nearly five years of back-and-forth, the Ultramar pier and dock located at the end of Constituyentes Avenue in Playa del Carmen has finally been closed down. The pier was built by Aquaworld in 2001 and was envisioned as a recreational pier and secondary ferry dock to back up the main installation at the town square, in front of the Playacar Palace.

The 200-yard dock was built on top of a coral reef and never had a complete environmental impact study done when the permits were granted. In fact, it is an on-going debate whether it ever had the correct permits in the first place. For the past several years, it has been used sporadically by the Ultramar ferry and by cruiseship tender boats, but for most of its existence, it has been roped off and guarded by private sercurity officials.

With this announcement, all operations have ceased, causing environmental groups to celebrate. Demolition could be the next step in the process, which will restore the beach view at the Gran Porto Real and Royal Porto Real resorts located on either side of the pier.
