Watching the World Cup in Playa del Carmen

Mexico Soccer Fans - Courtesy of FIFA - MayanHoliday.com
A strange thing happens every four years in June and July. Travel to the Riviera Maya from Latin America and Europe drops noticeably, as soccer fans from these countries stay home to watch the FIFA World Cup in their hometown bars and pubs. For U.S. visitors, though, this is a great time to visit Mexico and enjoy a little bit of the Futbol Fever that is missing back home.

Team Mexico scored twice in the last 20 minutes of their first game against Iran and won 3-1. Team USA had a poor showing against the Czech Republic and lost 3-0. Either way, these teams each have at least two more games in this year's international soccer tournament before the first round eliminations. Team Brazil, the reigning champion, is another exciting team to watch.

Key Games:
Brazil vs. Croatia -June 13 - 2pm Playa Time
Mexico vs. Angola - June 16 - 2pm Playa Time
USA vs. Italy - June 17 - 2pm Playa Time
Brazil vs. Australia - June 18 - 11am Playa Time
Mexico vs. Portugal - June 21 - 9am Playa Time
USA vs. Ghana - June 22 - 9am Playa Time
Brazil vs. Japan - June 22 - 2pm Playa Time

Viewing Tips:
* Get There Early - Wherever you go, go early. A good seat near the front is key if you want to watch the plays closely.
* Go Local - Consider skipping the tourist bars and finding a local's hangout. The crowd will be much more emotional and you'll have a more traditional World Cup experience.
* Dress The Part - Buy a cheap World Cup T-shirt from a Playa street vendor and show your colors during the game! It's OK to root for Team USA, unless they are playing Mexico!
