Las Velas Plans Mega-Resort for Capital Lafitte Site

PLAYA DEL CARMEN -- If all goes as planned, one of the Riviera Maya’s original hotels, the Posada de Capitan Lafitte, will be transformed into a 963-room mega-complex, with two hotels, beach club, waterfront restaurants, shopping plaza, watersports center and ecology conservation area. The Las Velas hotel chain will invest $100 million to transform the classic laid-back retreat and surrounding beach area into a resort with two hotels, the 608-room Hotel Grand Velas and the 355-room Casa Velas.

The Capital Lafitte was built in the 1970s and has long been a favorite of travelers wanting to get away for a relaxing vacation. The hotel is understated, with lots of outdoor areas, swaying palm trees and hammocks. The new vision for the property will be much more modern, with infinity pools, air-conditioned lounges and world-class restaurants. Las Velas has pledged to remain true to Lafitte's culture of conservation, particularly as it relates to the area's large turtle population.
