PLAYA DEL CARMEN -- A massive new development, dubbed the Chuchuen Project, has been approved for the beach between Punta Bete and Punta Maroma. The lot is at Km. 55 of the federal highway, north of Playa del Carmen. The project will have two hotels, totaling 847 rooms, at a cost of $186 million. The development will also have private beachfront lots, artificial lakes, spa, restaurants, shopping plaza, convention center and other attractions. Developers have guaranteed that the reef and other ecosystems will not be negatively affected by the project. Plans call for a grand opening some time in 2008.
