Locusts Pose No Threat to Tourist Areas

CANCUN -- News of a menacing plague of locusts shrouding corn crops and fields near Cancun for three weeks has caused a bit of a stir in the Riviera Maya. Officials in the region have assured the editors of MayanHoliday.com that the pests are staying far from the tourist areas, however, and currently pose no threat to the casual visitor.

The locusts, which are really grasshoppers in a specific life stage, have been traveling in dark clouds, swarming fields and consuming vegetation in the Yucatan, near Cancun, but not approaching the tourist areas, since the vegetation along the coast is not their preferred habitat. Luckily, it is near the end of the harvest season, so losses have been kept to a fairly low level.

Locals have been aggressively battling the bugs and seem to be gaining the upper hand. They expect to officially end the infestation within another week or so.
