PLAYA DEL CARMEN, September 27, 2006 -- Civil defense officials in Playa del Carmen reported more than four inches of rain in the span from 5:15pm to 6:45pm. The amount of rain is equivalent to what the area normally receives in three months, yet it fell in only an hour and a half. Several streets were closed and traffic on the main highway slowed to a crawl during the storm. There were various lightning strikes, including one near Mamitas Beach. No heavy winds were reported, but many traffic lights were still out as of late Wednesday night.
Most of the rain drained fairly quickly and within three hours, most of the city was back in operation. Power stayed on in most tourist hotels and most area businesses were able to stay open during the rains.
Sounds like a good reason to go to Happy Hour!
