SAN MIGUEL DE COZUMEL, May 31, 2006 -- The El Cid La Ceiba Beach Hotel on Cozumel's southwestern shore is opening the Cocai Spa & Wellness Center on June 10. In the native Mayan language, "cocai" means "firefly" and the resort staff expects guests' smiles to light up after a visit to this upscale Mayan-themed spa.
There are several treatment rooms offering a variety of services, including Swedish massage, body wraps, facials and sunburn therapy. There is also a temazcal sauna, modeled after a traditional Mayan sweat lodge.
The opening of the spa is part of the hotel's $8 million renovation project, which also updated the guestrooms, La Chopa Loca restaurant, lobby and pools.
The 71-room El Cid hotel is a favorite for scuba divers, since it has its own boat dock and the island's best dive sites are just a short ride away. There are also on-site tennis courts and a relaxing beach.
