Riviera Maya Hurricane Season Begins

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, June 1, 2006 -- Today is the first day of the Atlantic hurricane season. The forecast doesn't look good, but life here in the Riviera Maya carries on. The beaches are beautiful, the shops along 5th Avenue are bustling, the sun is shining and the beer is cold. Only 50% of hurricane seasons have any named storms in the month of June, with Allison and Andrew being the most notable recent exceptions.

Airline and hotel rates usually slack off a bit starting in June, making it a great time to book a trip to Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. It's not blistering hot and the humidity hasn't yet risen to the mid-summer levels. The clubs are full of vacationing college students, making it a fun time to be out and about. The visibility on Cozumel's reefs is awesome, with most days seeing 80-100 feet or more. The backroads of Akumal and Puerto Morelos have been cleaned from last year's debris and are ripe for exploring.

Even with hurricane season starting, June may be the perfect time to plan your vacation. Check the forecast, be prepared, be smart - and enjoy your vacation.
