Solo Sailing Milestone at Xcaret

The shores of Xcaret will welcome a triumphant sailor.
PUERTO MORELOS, June 2, 2006 -- In a few days, solo sailor Galia Moss will arrive in Xcaret to become the first Latin American woman to complete a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. She departed from Vigo, Spain, on April 25 and will have traveled some 3700 miles before arriving in the Riviera Maya.

"I have found an incredible inner peace," Moss said. "I am calmed by the sound of the water." Despite the sense of calm, she has expressed a strong desire to return to land and spend time with her family.

If all goes well, the sailor and her boat, the "El Mejor," will arrive on the shores of Xcaret on Sunday evening (June 4), though it could be as late as Tuesday, depending on the wind and weather. Park visitors will be welcomed to an arrival reception and can pose for pictures with her boat.

The boat is a regata sailboat designed by Finot/Conq. It weighs 8,267 pounds and is 31.5 feet long. It can stock up to 160 liters of drinking water and 30 liters of fuel. Moss stocked canned food and dehydrated meal for the journey.

Moss, a 31-year old Mexican native is also an airplane pilot and yoga instructor. She is dedicated to helping less fortunate families find comfortable houses and has been an inspiration for children across the Riviera Maya and around the world.
